Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations

Times of India newspaper article on Autonomous Body for Entrance Tests

In an effort to relieve the CBSE, the AICTE and other agencies of the responsibility of conducting entrance examinations, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared a proposal on Friday, 10th November 2017, for the creation of a National Testing Agency.

The agency will aim to bring high reliability and a standardised difficulty level to assess the aptitude, intelligence and problem-solving abilities of students.

The CBSE, barring the Board exams, will be relieved of tests like the Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE), NEET, UGC’s National Eligibility Test (twice a year), Central Teacher Eligibility Test (twice a year) and entrance tests for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

The NTA will get a one-time Rs 25 crore grant from the Centre to start operations in the first year. Thereafter, it has to be self-sustainable.

Under NTA, entrance tests to be held online.
